What specific actions has your school taken in the name of conservation?

Do teachers in your school leave their lights on at night?  Are computers left on all day?  What does your school to do reduce it's carbon footprint?

Some schools in NYC turn the heat on in May in order to consume the oil and avoid a cut in their budget. Air conditioners run through the night in lighted rooms and they throw away massive amounts of paper rather than recycling. Despite how irrational this sounds, it is an unfortunate reality.

In contrast, some schools are very focused on lowering their energy consumption.  Many building supervisors would appreciate advice and tips on how to lower their consumption of energy. With this in mind, please share some ideas of how your schools work toward sustainability and conservation.

Sustainability in the classroom

Is your school "Green"?  Do you know how to expose your students to concepts of sustainability and conservation?  Do you students understand the importance of sustainability?  Please share your best practices or post questions for others.

Athletic field maintenance.

How often are the athletic fields at your school watered? What kind of fertilizers are used, if any, to keep the grass weed free and green? In regards to sustainability, what steps is your district taking to make a minimal impact of the environment?

Recycling in Schools

Many schools in New York City dispose of all their waste. Schools are dumping large amounts of paper from handouts, unused newspapers and empty toner cartridges. We hope to create a space where schools can find and share information about starting up a recycling program.
